Killardfey hurlers had a very successful weekend (6th/7th July) when they played in an U-14 Blitz held in Fenians GAA Club in Johnstown, Co. Kilkenny.
They played three games, 15 mins a-side in each, which started at 11am on Saturday morning.
Their first two games saw them take on two Kilkenny teams and earn a draw against the hosts, Fenians, and then narrowly lose out to Emeralds of Urlingford.
In their last game they lost out to Carrick and Riverstown Gaels(Offaly GAA) in their final game of the blitz.
The panel put in a big effort in all there games in the energy sapping heat.
The host club, Fenians GAA were absolutely brilliant hosts with a full array of food and refreshments laid on for all teams and supporters.
The matches were a brilliant experience for our players and worth a huge amount more than training sessions.
It’s great for our players to see the standard of players in the MacCarthy Cup counties and how to close the gap and improve first-touch and skill levels.
There was a great buzz amongst the players on the build up to the Kilkenny trip. Our lads had great craic on the bus trip each way and stopped for some well earned food at the Mayfield services area on the way home. And it will be fondly remembered by all.
Buoyed on by their trip the U-14’s took on Maynooth on Sunday morning in Ardclough, in the last game of the group stages of the Division 2 league and won on a big scoreline of 8-11 to 0-01.
As Maynooth would have difficulties fielding a team for the Div.2 final next week, between the same teams, Maynooth requested that Killardfey be awarded the title and Killardfey capped their weekend with a league title.
Killardfey, and the clubs involved, are very grateful for the big effort put in by players, mentors and all other who’ve helped over the last four months.
Thanks also goes to the mentors: Andrew Whelan, Joe Fahy, James Cross, Ed Costello(Ardclough), Pat Croke (Kill),Mark Ryan and Gareth Hogan (Confey) for all their help with this group. It’s much appreciated.
